OSRS refers to Old School RuneScape, a massively multiplayer online role-player online role-playing game developed by Jagex. It is the version of RuneScape which was released in 2001. The game is available on various platforms, including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Android, and, iOS.

Unfortunately, some users received an error message “error connecting to server” while trying to log in to their OSRS account, as the following picture shows.

Don’t panic if you got the same error. It usually happens due to network issues, and here are some fixes.

Fix 1: Troubleshoot Server Issues

When you encounter OSRS error connecting to server, the first thing you can do is to check whether there are any server issues. You can visit some professional websites such as Downdetector to check for that. If it indicates no current problems, you can continue with the next fix. Otherwise, you might need to wait until the server issues are solved by developers.

Fix 2: Use Google DNS

Improper DNS settings could lead to OSRS error connecting to server. To solve the problem, you can try Google DNS. Here are the detailed steps.

Step 1: Press Win + I to open Windows Settings. Then go to Network & Internet. In the right pane, scroll down and select Change adapter options under the Change your network settings section.

Step 2: In the pop-up window, right-click the network you are using currently and choose Properties.

Step 3: In the following window, double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). Then under the General tab, select Use the following DNS server addresses and enter the values below.

  • Preferred DNS server: 8.8.8.8
  • Alternate DNS server: 8.8.4.4

Step 4: Keep the changed settings. Then double-click Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).

Step 5: In the pop-up window, select Use the following DNS server addresses and enter the values below.

  • Preferred DNS server: 2001:4860:4860::8844
  • Alternate DNS server: 2001:4860:4860::8888

Step 6: Keep the changes.

Then you can run your game and check whether the error connecting to server OSRS has been solved.

Fix 3: Disable Unused Network Adapters

Sometimes you might encounter RuneScape error connecting to server because of conflicting network adapters. If you have enabled more than one network adapter, you’d better disable those that are not be used currently. You can follow the tutorial below.

Step 2: Type ncpa.cpl in the box and click OK to open the Network Connections window.

Step 3: Right-click each unused network adapter and select Disable. Please note that you will lose the network connection if you disable the adapter that is currently used. To fix it, you just need to re-enable the adapter.

After disabling unused network adapters, you can restart your computer and check whether RuneScape error connecting to server disappears.
